Van Cowan was born in Braggs, Oklahoma in the eastern part of the state where country music was king. This was the part of Oklahoma where Webb Pierce loved to fish in Lake Tenkiller. It was not unusual to find Webb playing at the Old Rock gas station.
Van's partial to all music but remains partial to Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard.
During his 20 years in the navy Van so many great musicians live in concert, including Elvis Presley in Hawaii in 1961.
Van has been interested in the guitar and in singing for a long time, so he decided to take some guitar lessons. One thing led to another and he wound up at a SWAN meeting.
"The songwriters association is a great thing for beginners and I can learn so much from being around talented people with guitars."
The same can be said for just being around Van.
